Radon in Your Well Water — What Ontario & Quebec Homeowners Need to Know
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can dissolve into groundwater and be released into your home's air every time you run a tap, shower, or use an appliance connected to your well. Health Canada and the U.S. EPA both list radon exposure as a leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and well water is a common — and often overlooked — source.
Ontario and Quebec have areas with naturally elevated radon levels due to local geology, particularly the Canadian Shield regions. If your home relies on a private well, radon isn't something municipal water testing will catch for you.
How Airwell removes it: Our systems treat water directly at the wellhead, stripping radon (along with sulfur and methane) before it ever reaches your taps — removing 90–99% of these gases.
Signs it's worth testing for radon:
Signs it's worth getting tested:
• You have a private well and haven't tested for radon in the last 2 years
• You're buying or selling a home that relies on well water
• Your home has a basement or lower level where radon gas can accumulate
• You want peace of mind for your family's long-term health
• You've noticed a sulfur or "rotten egg" smell (often co-occurs with radon in the same geology)
Sulfur & Methane in Your Well Water - Common Signs and What to Do
If your water smells like rotten eggs, or you've noticed gurgling, sputtering taps, or even a slight "fizz" when you fill a glass, you're likely dealing with hydrogen sulfide or methane gas in your well water - two of the most common issues we treat for homeowners across Ontario and Quebec.
Hydrogen sulfide is the gas behind that sulfur smell. It's not usually a health hazard at typical household levels, but it's corrosive to plumbing and fixtures over time, and it makes water unpleasant to drink, cook with, or shower in.
Methane is more serious — it's flammable and can build up in enclosed spaces like well pits, pressure tanks, or even inside your home, creating a real safety risk. It's also often invisible until it's causing problems, which is why testing matters even without an obvious smell.
How Airwell removes them: Our systems treat water directly at the wellhead, stripping sulfur and methane (along with radon) before they reach your taps or build up in your plumbing - removing 90-99% of these gases at the source.
Signs it's worth getting tested:
• Rotten egg smell from any tap, especially hot water
• Sputtering, gurgling, or air in your pipes
• Tarnishing on silverware or plumbing fixtures
• A well pit or pressure tank that has never been checked for gas
